Vedic and Later Vedic Age
Vedic India for UPSC — the Rigveda and later Vedic texts, Rigvedic rivers and tribes, polity, economy, society, religion, and the shift to the Ganga plains.
SyllabusGS I · History of India (Prelims); Indian culture — salient aspects of literature, art forms and philosophy from ancient times (Mains GS I)
This chapter covers the Vedic age, roughly c. 1500–600 BCE: the early (Rigvedic) phase in the land of seven rivers, and the later Vedic phase in the Ganga-Yamuna doab, when iron, settled farming, kingdoms and a rigid varna order took shape. Our main source is the Vedic literature itself — composed and preserved orally for centuries — supported by archaeology such as Painted Grey Ware sites.
