SyllabusGS I · Salient features of world's physical geography; physical geography of India — climate, monsoon and important geophysical phenomena
The monsoon is the single most important fact of Indian geography. It decides the kharif harvest, rural incomes, reservoir levels, food inflation and hydropower — which is why each year’s forecast makes national news.
What UPSC asks
- Prelims: the mechanism (ITCZ, jet streams, Tibetan heating), El Niño, La Niña and the Indian Ocean Dipole, local winds (mango showers, Kalbaisakhi, loo), western disturbances, why Tamil Nadu gets its rain in winter, and rain-shadow regions.
