Reading Comprehension
CSAT reading comprehension for UPSC Prelims Paper II — question types, the elimination method for inference and assumption questions, and timed passage practice.
SyllabusCSAT · Comprehension; English language comprehension skills (Class X level)
Reading comprehension is consistently one of the largest blocks of CSAT (Prelims GS Paper II), and it is the block where a careful reader can collect marks without any calculation. UPSC passages are usually short (one or two paragraphs) and drawn from policy themes — agriculture, climate, economy, ethics, education, science and society. The questions do not test how much you know about the theme; they test whether you can separate what the passage says from what it merely suggests and from what you already believe.
Comprehension is a Prelims-only skill in this form: CSAT is qualifying (33%, that is 66 of 200 marks), with one-third negative marking. Passages under “English language comprehension skills” appear in English only, without a Hindi translation.
